Talk Shows

TALK and ENTERTAINMENT:
There are currently 9 selections in this category

This first featured selection under our 'Talk and Entertainment' category was granted and added on December 25, 2018. What better time to receive a gift! It is one of my favorites. It's a very unique and entertaining offering.
The Radio8Ball Show has a fun premise; We have the host, a musical guest, and a one question... What that question is, might come from a phone-in caller, or someone visiting right there in the studio..
The answer to the question is revealed through the assistance of synchronicity, via a spin of the wheel, flip of a coin, or the turn of a card, that determines the song the musical guest performs live, usually acoustically, right there in the studio as the answer to the question which was asked. Discussion ensue on how that synchronicity-selected song related to the question which had been asked.
There are also several special tribute episodes to famous old school artist like Joni Michell, Tom Petty, Harry Nilsson & The Posies.

The show always begins with the same theme song (written by Andras Jones), with each musical guest performing there own version so it always sounds different. Here's a sample of one version (from the Nilsson tribute) which I particularly like, there's another that I thought kind of sounds like the Beatles, and plenty of other cool renditions of it...

The lyrics explain the show:

...

I'll have more to say about this show in my blog, but for now let's move on to airing it on your own stations.. After several communications with Andras Jones (Pronounced On-Dross Joe-n's) the creator and host of Radio8Ball, concerning making the show freely available to broadcast, he ultimately granted the rights with only the following stipulations:

"...I'm totally down (with these provisions):
1. Stations can download the podcasts without my help
2. Stations get in touch with me before they start broadcasting the shows and keep me informed about changes to the broadcast schedule
3. I'd like to approve the language and artwork on our listing before it goes live
4. Note: The podcast is rated "explicit" due to the occassional shit or fuck but most of the shows are FCC clean.

It took me a little time to get my head around what you're doing but now that I get it (I hope) I think it's very cool and am honored to be invited.

Thanks,
Andras Jones"

*Allow me to mention here that I've already listened to a good number of the episodes and as of yet have not noticed any use of explicit language, but you'll have to take it upon yourself to give an episode prior review before airing. I have more to say about this show but that will be in one of my blog post. For now, here's a text copy overview history of the Radio8Ball show:

Below is from a text copy describing Radio8Ball as provided by the creator and host of the show. Don't forget you can click any of the images to get a closer look.

RADIO8BALL: Questions Answered. Answers Questioned.

Radio8Ball is a musical divination format created by Andras Jones in which questions are answered by picking songs at random and interpreting the musical synchronicity of the experience. Currently, Radio8Ball is a daily podcast distributed by Starburns Audio and hosted by Andras Jones. Radio8Ball features live songwriters lik Inara George, Allen Toussaint, Jon Auer, Myra Flynn, The Essex Green, Mary Lou Lord performing and interpreting their songs as the "Pop Oracle" answers to questions from celebrity guests like John Trudell,  John C. Reilly, Tig Notaro, Patricia Arquette, Rae Dawn Chong & Viggo Mortensen.

Radio8Ball began on the airwaves at KAOS FM at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington where the dream seminars led by his father, Richard M. Jones, formed the philosophical underpinnings of what would become his son's creation. Radio8Ball ran on KAOS from 1998 to 2008 at which point events took place at the station which are detailed in Andras' book
"Accidental Initiations: In The Kabbalistic Tree of Olympia" from Sync Book Press, that changed the trajectory of the evolution of the format. What followed was 5 years of live theatrical productions of Radio8Ball in Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Joshua Tree and Olympia and eventually, what we consider to be its natural home, as a daily podcast.

There is a Radio8Ball app which, as of this writing, is only available to Android users. Coming soon to iTunes. The R8B app welcomes listeners to ask a question and shake their phone which generates a randomly chosen song from the over 1800 tracks recorded over the history of Radio8Ball. These include famous folks and wonderful unknowns, as well as Andras Jones's own music (which falls somewhere between these two poles). The app also features the daily podcast and allows listeners to shuffle through the entire catalog. It's free. We invite you to give it a shake.

Here's a well established, one hour weekly program. Basically an interview based talk show which focuses on environmental issues. RADIO ECOSHOCK SHOW hosted by Alex Smith www.ecoshock.info It's definitely a well done, interesting, and worthy addition for your station. Professionally produced in Vancouver, Canada, with contributing correspondents in Washington, San Francisco, and London. The vast majority of the listening audience and the stations from which it airs reside in the US. A helpful guide for easily integrating this show into your program schedule. as well as an archive of past programs are provided on their companion site at  http://www.ecoshock.net.
Latest science, authors, issues - from climate change, oceans, forests, pollution, peak oil, the economy, and peace. Ready for re-broadcast... As heard on over 85 college & community radio stations on 3 continents.. Free to any non-profit station. The main thrust of the program is to help create a better environment, safe for all coming generations. Listeners hear a lot about climate change, the oceans, safe food production, toxics, living forests and the like.  Climate change is our largest single issue. Secondarily, we also cover related issues like the fossil fuel supply system, including peak oil, dangerous nuclear accidents, drilling and mining safety, and the impact of dwindling or dirty fuel supplies on our daily lives. Very rarely, we cover serious financial problems and our personal economy, especially when it endangers switching to safer energy options, or endangers the environment. And in case the situation fails, we also provide help with self-reliance, localization, transition, healthy eating, and food storage. http://www.ecoshock.info

I guess you could call this category a poor mans Coast to Coast Am.. This first one is definately a premium quality offering from the Dark Matter Radio Network, featuring a number of paranormal programs and host, including the legendary Art Bell, all of which are free to air for part 15 stations providing you follow the rules outlined on the affiliate page. http://midnightinthedesert.com/become-an-affiliate/
The show I first happened to be listening to was Midnight in the Desert, and found it to be upbeat and entertaining, but there are many others to choose from; Dark Matter, QSO (Ham Radio Show), Hyperspace, Real Ghost Stories, After Dark Radio, Where Did the Road Go?, Astronomy Cast, Big Picture Science, Other Side of Midnight, Expanded Perspectives, Night Watch... and more.
But remember this...
" ...They MUST follow our rules. They should be encouraged to let us know, so we could put a Part15 section list together, that would be cool! They can carry any other of our content as well."

Here is another one, which again, is not really a newscast, but until I create a separate category to better classify it, I'm going to list it as such...

The ever enjoyable The Stuph File program (pronounced 'Stuff File') hosted by veteran broadcaster Peter Anthony Holder; "Hey there, hi there, ho there.." The program begins with audio of the familiar and retro 'peacock' NBC intro "The following program is brought to you in living color.." then a few moments previewing the episode and guest you are about to hear. Next comes a 5 minute newscast of odd-but-true news stories from around the US. (and sometimes beyond). And then the show continues for the rest of the hour with interviews of the featured guests and whatever the topics on hand may be.  During the span of each episode there are also several more inserts of brief oddball/true newscast, idiots of the day, a few psa's, and brief retro tv theme clips scattered throughout the program. It's a very entertaining show - and I don't mean goofy or silly - it's a genuinely interesting presentation which I believe any audience would take pleasure in.

An eclectic program that's a mix of interesting interviews and odd news.. Guests I've had the pleasure to talk to in 20 years of hosting a late night radio show include the likes of Star Trek's George Takei; Steve Allen, the first host of The Tonight Show; Burt Ward, Batman's original Robin; Buddy Ebsen; the legendary Carol Channing; astronaut Alan Bean, who walked on the moon; Lindsay Wagner, The Bionic Woman; Cloris Leachman; Karl Malden; Peter Bogdanovich; Gilligan himself, Bob Denver and more. In addition to celebrities there have also been some decidedly quirky guests too. That tradition continues with The Stuph File as I offer up a variety of guests and a myriad of topics, such as science fiction writer Robert J. Sawyer; Academy Award winning actor George Chakiris from West Side Story; actress Yvette Nicole Brown from NBC's Community; actress Michael Learned, from The Waltons; actor/comic Tom Arnold and civil rights activist and former U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Andrew Young.  Plus a man who has Hitler's toilet; a professional juggler; a guy who trains llamas to be golf caddies; the founder of the Church of Jediism and more! Join me and become part of The Stuph File Nation!
Dec 18, 2016 - Thanks for reaching out. Yes, you have my permission.  The only stipulation I need is that those who air it have to let me know where it’s airing and what time it’s airing.  Also any idea of the numbers of what any potential audience for the show might be. The completed show is available on my website, blog, Stitcher, TuneIn.com and also radio4all.net just to name a few locations.  I hope that’s enough information for you.

All best,

I'm not sure I should classify this as a newscast, as it's really more of a commentary/talk program but it does cover current news and events, albeit in a much more indepth focused way..
It is certainly a proffesional, informative, and well done program.
Here's excerpts of info from their website:

The Project Censored Show is a weekly public affairs program that airs Fridays from 1-2 P.M. Pacific time on KPFA Pacifica Radio. The program is an extension of the work Project Censored began in 1976 celebrating independent journalism while fighting media censorship and supporting a truly free press. The program focuses on The News That Didn’t Make the News. Each week, co-hosts Mickey Huff and Peter Phillips conduct in depth interviews with their guests and offer hard hitting commentary on the key political, social, and economic issues of the day with an emphasis on critical media literacy. The program began broadcasting in 2010 and is nationally syndicated on over 35 stations.. ..We expose and oppose news censorship and we promote independent investigative journalism, media literacy, and critical thinking. An informed public is crucial to democracy in at least two basic ways.  First, without access to relevant news and opinion, people cannot fully participate in government.   Second, without media literacy, people cannot evaluate for themselves the quality or significance of the news they receive.  Censorship undermines democracy.http://projectcensored.org

Mickey Huff is director and co-host of the Project Censored Show. He is on the board of directors for the Media Freedom Foundation, and currently professor of social science and co-chair of the history department at Diablo Valley College in the San Francisco Bay area, he teaches courses in the social sciences and US history with an emphasis on the recent past.  His special areas of focus include “Money, Power, and Politics” and “Critical Reasoning in History.”.
Huff has been honored with a PEN literary award, and has been interviewed by NPR, PBS, ABC, Pacifica, The New York Times Co., Russia Today (RT TV), Progressive Radio Network, Republic Broadcasting, and many other commercial and independent news media outlets. He has been a lecturer at numerous colleges, and speaks regularly at venues across the US on issues of censorship, propaganda, media literacy, and historiography.
Huffs work has appeared in numerous academic journals and books and online sites.  He testified as an expert at the Kent State Truth Tribunal in New York City in 2010 and has been an outspoken advocate for addressing historical inaccuracies in the Kent State shootings of 1970 as well as many other events in the recent past.  Huff  is also a musician and composer of over twenty-five years.  He lives with his family in northern California. [mickey@projectcensored.org]

Peter Phillips is president, co-host, and previous director (1997-2010) of the Project Censored show. He is a professor Sociology at Sonoma State University, and holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from University of California, earned a B.A. degree in Social Science from Santa Clara University, an M.A. degree in Social Science from California State University at Sacramento, and a second M.A. in Sociology. Phillips currently teaches classes in Investigative Sociology, Sociology of Power, Political Sociology, Sociology of Conspiracies and Sociology of Media.
Phillips has published fourteen editions of Censored: Media Democracy in Acton from Seven Stories Press. Also from Seven Stories Press he is an editor for Impeach the President: The Case Against Bush and Cheney (2006), and hundreds of written pieces on socio-political issues in popular press, such as Z magazine, Free Inquiry, Counterpunch, Common Dreams, Buzzflash, Dissident Voice, Social Policy, and Briarpatch. He frequently speaks on media censorship and various socio-political issues on radio and TV talks shows including Talk of the Nation,Air America, Talk America, World Radio Network, Flashpoints, and the Jim Hightower Show.. Phillips continues to contribute scholarly articles to the annual Project Censored book and other publications. [peter@projectcensored.org]

Andy Lee Roth is associate director of Project Censored. He earned a Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles and a B.A. in Sociology and Anthropology at Haverford College. Roth has published research on communities organizing for urban parklands (in the journal City & Community), journalists’ questioning of electoral candidates (Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics), public commentary on federal tobacco control legislation (Social Studies of Science), and social interaction in broadcast news interviews (Language in Society and Media, Culture & Society). His current work focuses on the importance of a free press for democratic self-government and the ways that corporate news media narrow the scope of legitimate public debate. He teaches sociology at Sonoma State University and the College of Marin. [adf55@yahoo.com]

Note : The following program is also listed under the SPECIALTY category:

This program from KDX World Round Radio is produced and hosted by Carl Blare. It's the only show I know of made specifically for part15 broadcasters. The Low Power Hour, now with over 100 episodes under his belt, you never know what you might hear.. I have particular fondness of his earlier episodes, and highly recommend them, as their focus maintained a more constant emphasis specifically about Part 15 topics, with fascinating interviews, stories, advice, etc..
I made a previous post about a particular past episode (one of my favorites) [here]..
His more recent episodes still do provide updated news and events about Part 15 broadcasters and broadcasting, however nowadays the show tends to consist of a wider variety of content, and a little more whimsy than during it's original connotation had, nevertheless, it's great to get the part 15 updates on the air. Unfortunately, there are no longer public links to provide to the episodes, but they are all available to your station as an affiliate, all you have to do is contact him. I asked Carl why he no longer provides public links to his older episodes and he explained;...
"..By making the shows available for radio stations only the obligations change and the responsibility for copyright goes to stations that stream the shows. Unless I'm wrong.
Newer shows starting with # 100 are using royalty free music which should remove the burden of concern.
Lest his above statement should mislead you, I should clarify that The Low Power Hour is by no means a type of musical programing, only that music is often utilized in one way or another for portions of the program.
Also available from KDX is the entertaining  Blare OnAir and Blare OnAir Lite shows.
The Low Power Hour (LPH) radio program is freely available for non-commercial re-transmission by Part 15 Authorized Stations. No derivatives may be taken, programs must be used intact.  Please notify KDX of your use of the program. You will be mentioned on further editions of LPH for promotional benefit and listed as an Affiliate Station.  Submissions of your own low power interviews or other clips may be included in future editions of the LPH.  Contact: carl@kdxradio.com.  The Low Power Hour may not be re-distributed without express permission.
The Low Power Hour is currently aired on over 20 stations. Add yours to the list of affiliates! Contact Carl via his website at www.kdxradio.com or email him directly: carl@kdxradio.com Tell him the Part15LAB sent you!
